Medicare Part D & Prescription Drugs
Now we are dealing with a different situation. Quite naturally we want to keep Johnnie healthy and we cannot do that without his medications. Johnnie is on Medicare and is participating in the Medicare Part D plan. However, when he was first eligible for Medicare Part D he received extra help from Social Security and they covered his premiums, co-pays and deductibles. Now, for some reason Social Security says that he no longer qualifies for extra help, so now we are forced to pay his premiums, co-pays and meet the deductibles, which we cannot do. Now, Johnnie is still taking a number of medications to keep him from rejecting his Liver (which he will be on for the rest of his life) and he is on 4 blood pressure medications, he is on treatment for his Hepatits C, and 2 different types of insulin, because he is a diabetic (from being on some of the medications needed to keep his body from rejecting the new Liver) plus many others. Two of Johnnie's medications cost about $2500 and another about $1400, which he would have to pay 33% of their cost in order for the Medicare Part D plan to cover it. That's about $1600 we have to pay, plus the monthly premium, and we have to have met the deductible of $275 before the plan would pay. And that's just 3 medications.
